Artist Statement

I am a mixed media artist who views art making as both a portal into and response to life.
My art making challenges me to explore what is most true and be open to what can be revealed. I often respond to what I encounter in my external environment whether it be the people, animals, or sights of the city or natural world. What I create or choose to see is guided by my inner landscape and what is calling to me. Ultimately art making is about seeing and trusting that vision.
I started my education as an art student. I studied art many years ago at UCLA School of Design, University of Redlands, and Art Academy in San Francisco, and have studied over the years with teachers in the communities in which I have lived.
After receiving a degree in Fine Art I went on to do graduate work and my career took several twists and turns. I received training and taught in Montessori schools. I received an MDiv and did urban ministry. I received an MSW and worked as a social worker and psychotherapist for over 30 years. All the while I have had a studio and experienced times of greater or lesser productivity in terms of art making.
My path has shown me life from the perspective of an artist, an educator, a theologian, a counselor and healer and I come around at this time in my life to a fuller expression of who I am as an artist.
It is my belief that we all have a tapestry or composition that is our life’s journey. I believe this to be true even if the streets we have traveled seem to go in different directions or seem unrelated. There is a creative power and purpose that carries us through and shows up again and again expressing who we are on our path in life.
